KEY TEXT: Revelation 5:1-6 Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?" And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, "Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals." And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
KEY THOT: In this vision, John saw in God's hand the scroll that was sealed with seven seals. And no one was worthy to open except Jesus Christ who is described as "the Lion of the tribe of Judah.. (who) has conquered" and also "a Lamb standing as though it had been slain" (vv.5-6). Christ is at once the bold conquering Lion of Judah and the meek conquered Lamb that was slain. Only Christ who has such a dual Lion-Lamb character could open the seven seals. In similar vein, only readers who share the same dual attitude of boldness and meekness will be ready to receive Jesus' revelation contained in the seven seals.
The Lion of Judah is here described as the "Root of David", reminding us that Jesus is the Messiah-King. He is the Conqueror and He has made us "more than conquerors through him who loved us" (Romans 8:37). Believers are placed in a position of spiritual warfare against the works of the enemy to set his slaves free. We are placed into the Kingdom not just to mind our own businesses and pleasures but to mind God's business and pleasure. We have been enlisted into spiritual warfare to preach the Kingdom, heal the sick and cast out demons.
On the other hand, we are also to be Lamb-like, totally submitted to obey God unto death, and filled with His authority ("seven horns") and His Spirit ("seven eyes"). Only those who are totally surrendered to do God will experience His authority and power in this spiritual warfare.
And when we have these same twin attitudes of boldness and meekness will we be ready to receive the revelation of the seven seals. The seven seals when opened can cause those unprepared to become fearful at the things that will come and have already come in these last days.
May the Lord grant us boldness of the Lion and meekness of the Lamb in these last days. May we die to self-indulgent lifestyle in order to fulfill God's agenda in our lives, especially in this new year of 2018.
Abba-Father, what a glorious picture of Christ as the Lion-Lamb of God. May we share His characteristics as Your people and may our eyes be enlightened in these last days. Amen.
