Revelation 9:13-21 The Trumpet of Global Conflict

KEY TEXT: Revelation 9:13-21 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar before God, saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates." So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released to kill a third of mankind. The number of mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand; I heard their number. And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphire and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were like lions' heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths. By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound. The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

KEY THOT: When the sixth trumpet is sounded, four angels bound at the Euphrates river will be released. These angels are likely to be higher order demons who are given the power to kill, unlike those demons released earlier from the Abyss: "So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released to kill a third of mankind" (v.15). The mention of 200 million mounted troops ("twice ten thousand times ten thousand") suggests that the release of these four angels will trigger a major global military conflict which will result in the death of one-third of mankind by "the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths" (v.17). The mention of fire, smoke and sulfur suggests the use of gunpowder, since sulfur is one of the ingredients in gunpowder. One author suggests that perhaps what John saw was modern military weaponry with its highly destructive fire-power, e.g. shells fired from fast-moving tanks and deadly missiles fired from flying helicopters. However, John could only describe them in terms of pictures he was familiar with.

While we may speculate on the likely cause of death of one-third of mankind, it is clearly an intensification of the suffering inflicted on earth's inhabitants as a result of their stubborn refusal to repent: "The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts." (vv. 20-21). Mankind will be increasingly aligned with satanism through their worship of demons and the practice of idolatry. These lead to murders (including mass murders by terrorists), sorceries (including all sorts of witchcraft and new age practices), sexual immorality (including all forms of unnatural sexual activities), and thefts (including sophisticated financial frauds and scams).

The recent exposure of corruptions among high-profile people in Hollywood, in governments and media is but the tip of the iceberg. This moral corruption is happening at every level of our society, and not just confined to these high-profile celebrities. And there is an attempt to normalize such moral and spiritual evil by treating this rising tide of sins as the "new normal". But for God, it is abnormal and such wickedness will not escape His wrath.

Abba-Father, You are not only loving but holy. You will not allow Your planet to be corrupted by evil without any response of holy wrath. May Your people who are called by Your name stay far from this moral and spiritual corruption. Amen.
