Reflection on Advent (Day 2): Jesus our Anchor

KEY TEXT: Hebrews 6:19-20 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

KEY THOT: The author of Hebrews describes Jesus as the eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek who has no beginning. And Jesus has "enters the Presence behind the veil", a reference to the Holy of Holies of the Tabernacle. The author of Hebrews refers to the tabernacle as a "copy and shadow of the heavenly things" (Heb. 8:5). So, "Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us... once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself" (Hebrews 9:24-26).

Jesus came to earth with the purpose to prepare the way for us to enter into the presence of God by offering himself as the sacrifice for sins. And the veil separating the Holy of holies (God's glory) from the priests and people has now been torn when Jesus died. We now have free access into the Holy of Holies in worship through Jesus Christ who has cleansed our sins by His blood to make us clean in God's sight.
This is the gift of Christmas--not just a baby born on Christmas Day but the sacrificial Lamb born to die for sins. It's not his birth that brings salvation but His death. Even as we celebrate the coming of the Saviour, we must not forget the price He has to pay to secure for us a place in heaven with God. In fact, among the three gifts that the Magi brought to Jesus at his birth was myrrh. Myrrh is used for embalming the dead in NT times. The other two gifts (gold and frankincense) suggests Christ's royalty and deity (gold) and his mission to restore men's worship (frankincense) to the true God.

Jesus is now the "anchor of our soul" because He has gone beyond the veil and become our Forerunner to secure a place for us in Heaven where God's presence is.

Abba-Father, what a privileged position we have in Christ, for He has entered into the Holy of holies. Our anchor is secure because we now sit with Christ in the heavenlies at the right hand of the Father. Amen.
