KEY THOT: The psalmist David was "in distress". He elaborates his distress as wasting away of his eye "from grief", including his soul and body. He is suffering emotional, mental and physical distress. He is clearly also suffering from depression ("my life is spent in sorrow and my years in sighing"). And all these occur "because of my iniquity" (v.10). Even his bones "waste away." David is in complete meltdown emotionally, mentally, and physically. Even his immune system has been compromised because his bones has wasted away (presumably a reference to the drying up of the bone marrow where the white blood cells are being produced). His sin triggers off a complete breakdown of the health of his soul and body. This spirit-soul-body connection is confirmed by latest medical science research on the brain. It estimates that up to 85% of our physical, mental and emotional diseases are caused by toxic mindsets defiled by our sin and iniquity.
Many times when we pray for people at the altar to be healed of their sicknesses, we do not ask them to repent of sins that cause the sicknesses for fear of being labelled as "judgmental". But much of the time, the persons remain unhealed (research found that only 5% are healed through prayer). If we do not teach this connection between sin (toxic mindset) and sickness, people we pray for will remain in their sin and sickness.
Consider the following scriptures:
- John 5:14-15 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you."
- James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.
- Mark 2:5-6, 10-11 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven"... But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—he said to the paralytic—"I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home."
Medical science try to treat the symptoms of a sickness but only Scripture can remove the root that gives rise to those symptoms. Medication can give temporary relief but only repentance can give health and wholeness to our spirit, soul and body.
Father, be gracious to us and forgive our sins,so that You may heal us completely and grant us health and wholeness. Amen.
