Psalm 98: May this Christmas be Joyful, not Jolly!

KEY TEXT: Psalms 98:4-6 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!

KEY THOT: The world tells us that Christmas is a season to be jolly--feasting, partying and merry-making. But Scripture tells us that this is the season to be joyful: "make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!... With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord" This is a season to be make loud and "joyful noise" in praise and worship because God has done "marvelous things" and made known his salvation, "his righteousness in the sight of the nations." Jesus' birth is an announcement of God's salvation. So let's celebrate with gusto before the Lord in joyful praise and worship, not with merry-making, partying and feasting like the world does. This is the season for Christians to be joyful, not jolly!

God's salvation in Jesus Christ is a revelation of three important attributes about God's character: his righteousness, his steadfast love and his faithfulness. Those of us who are saved through Jesus Christ experience his righteousness (moral integrity), steadfast love (self-giving) and faithfulness (commitment). For these reasons alone, we can and should rejoice and celebrate. May this Christmas be a celebration of joyful praise and worship. Amen.
