Psalm 113 God Helps Nobody to become Somebody

KEY TEXT: Psalms 113:5-9 Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord!

KEY THOT: Despite God’s high and exalted status above the heavens, he looks “far down on the heavens and the earth”. His focus is not on the high and mighty but rather on the poor and needy: “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes”. God takes delight in making all nobodies into somebodies. He even wants to bless the barren woman so that she can be “the joyous mother of children”. That is our Father-God: He is not just transcendent – beyond human reach. He is also immanent, “God with us”. He specializes in lifting the status of the poor to be equal to princes so that all glory might go to Him. So, no matter how we view ourselves, especially if we think we are nobodies, then remember that God + Nobody = Somebody.

However, let’s not put our trust in ourselves or others to become somebody. Let’s look up to God who is above heavens to turn us who is a nobody in society to become somebody in His kingdom. At the end of the day, it’s not our position in human society that makes us somebody but our position in the divine kingdom that counts for eternity. If we have to surrender our earthly position, power and prosperity in this world so that we can be somebody in God's kingdom, then it's not a sacrifice, but a privilege and a joy that will last for all eternity.

Father God, thank You that despite our poor and needy condition, You have taken an interest in our needs to raise and lift us out of our situation, that all glory may go to You. Amen.
