KEY THOT: Making Jesus Lord and accepting His salvation can often mean rejection and division in the family. Bringing light into darkness does not always result in healing and reconciliation—sometime light brings heat and conflicts because it exposes the darkness of sin. Not everyone likes to be shown up as hypocrites and liars. There will be a push-back even by our own family members when we longer share the same value system as them: “Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three” (vv.51-52).
Jesus is the way, the truth and the life—and He will always challenge postmodern claims that all ways and all religions are equally valid and true. By asserting his uniqueness, Jesus is making other truth-claims seem like mostly lies and deception—and that is likely to trigger opposition by those who are committed to those truth claims. It will cause even division within a family--and very often even churches. To stand up for Truth is to stand up against Lies—and that is not going to make us very popular or welcomed by those who reject our truth-claims.
But the irony is everyone believes they have a monopoly on truth. But the biblical concept of truth is not just right thinking but right living. Truth will result in holy living--if it does not result in godly lifestyle, then it is false. The only way we can know what is truth is by the Spirit of Truth which reveals the Word of Truth (Scripture) to transform our lives--for the better. Only truth can set us free--lies bring us into bondage to sins.
Ultimately, truth is not just an idea but a Person. The Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth and lead us to the Truth Himself, Jesus Christ. Thank God that as long as we abide in Christ, we will abide in the Truth and experience Eternal Life, which is knowing the true God. And this may cause division and conflicts for Jesus has said: "I came to cast fire on earth, and would that it were already kindled!" (v.49).
Father, in this world, there are many truth-claims—all vying for acceptance as the only way, the only truth and the only life. We affirm that Jesus Christ is indeed the only way to the Father because Your truth has set us free to live godly lives. Amen.
