Colossians 1:15-28 Presenting Everyone Perfect in Christ

KEY TEXT: Colossians 1:27-28. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.

KEY THOT: The mystery of the gospel is “Christ in you, the hope of glory”. This Christ is the very presence of God himself (“image of the invisible God”, “fullness dwell in him”). He is also the Creator (“all things were created by him and for him”) and Sustainer of the Universe (“in him all things hold together”). And He is the Firstborn from the dead, and the Head of the Church, his body. Christ who is high and exalted in the heaven also now dwells within everyone of us. It is this divine presence within every believer that is ultimately our hope of glory--the power to transform us from glory to glory, revealing more and more the Christ hidden within us.

For this reason, Paul states the goal of his ministry is to “present everyone perfect (complete) in Christ” (v.28). In other words, to form Christ in us, so that what started off as an imputation of Christ’s righteousness by faith (seed) becomes an impartation of Christ’s righteousness (fruit) through active obedience to the Spirit. The means to accomplish this goal is to "proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom" (v.28). To proclaim Christ is evangelism; to admonish is to counsel and guide new converts; and to teach everyone is to disciple and mentor growing believers. This three-fold process corresponds to what we are doing in our church: (1) Alpha (proclaiming Christ); (2) post-Alpha (admonishing new converts); (3) disciple-making through CG, MG and DG (teaching everyone via the care groups, mentoring groups and discipleship groups).

The goal of our ministry is not just the accumulation of bible-knowledge. The goal is to form Christ completely in every believer, so that they might become like Christ in how they think, say and act in every situation. Only then can we say that Christ is perfected in them. Only then can this mystery of Christ in us becomes the hope of our glory when He returns.

Father, give us a clear vision of discipleship—the goal and the strategy—so that we can present everyone perfect in Christ. Amen.
