Psalm 30 God's Favour is for a Lifetime

KEY TEXT: Ps 30:4-5 Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.

KEY THOT: Like earthly fathers, God’s favour towards His children is for a lifetime. But there will be times when we stray and walk off the path of righteousness. That will be when we experience His displeasure and rebuke. However, that moment of displeasure will be short as God’s default mode is to bless us and to make His face shine upon us. But there will be times in our lives when God’s love compels him to discipline us. This truth is stated quite unequivocally in Hebrews 12:5-9.
  • My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son." Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!
Like the psalmist David declares: “Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning” (v.5b). However, if we walk by the Spirit, just as Jesus did while he was on earth, we would not have to suffer much weeping of discipline, Instead, our mourning over our sins will turn into dancing of praise and worship to God. God wants us to be always dancing with joy for His favour towards us lasts a lifetime. Like earthly fathers, we may occasionally be displeased by our children’s behavior, but we never withdraw our favour towards them for no other reason than they are our children.

Lord, teach us to walk like true sons and daughters of God. Help us live like Jesus, the Son of God who always submit to the Father that we may always experience Your pleasure. Amen.
