Everything on earth depends on the Lord for its sustenance and survival: food for physical nourishment, joy for emotional health, breath for life, the Spirit for the renewal of all life-forms. Without the Spirit of God hovering over the earth, everything on earth will cease--for matter, energy, and life come from the Spirit of God. Without God, we would all simply perish and cease to exist, for our entire being—our physical, emotional and spiritual life—depends on God’s sustaining power. That is why He alone deserves honour and glory and praise, not man. No matter how ingenious and inventive humans may think of themselves in terms of science and technology (remember Babel), without God, the earth and humans wouldn't be around to have science and technology in the first place.
A story is told about a scientist who challenged God and declared Science can now do everything that God can do, including creating human life. And God responded, “Prove it”. The scientist then proceeded to take some dust from the ground. God stopped him and said, “Oh no you don’t! You made your own dust! Don’t use mine!”
The point of this story is that man cannot even start anything without first making use of God’s created order. Now scientists are trying to create designer babies by genetic modification and boasting about their ability to mimic “virgin birth”. But they forgot who created the DNA in the first place. Man cannot claim to have created anything except take what belongs to God and try to modify or meddle with it. Even man’s ability to think is a product of his brain created by God. It is vanity to attribute anything to man--only God alone deserves our praise and honour. Man’s arrogance knows no bound, but the psalmist declares: “May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works, who looks on the earth and it trembles, and who touch the mountains and they smoke!” (v. 31-32).
The Lord is the Source of life and everything else! Without the Spirit of God, there is nothing on this earth—just an earth “without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Gen. 1:2). May we learn to give honour to the only wise God who made the heavens and the earth and everything in it—including our ability to think and freedom to choose! May we choose to give Him glory and praise because without Him, there is nothing—not even dust! No matter, no energy and no life.
Father, what amazing power and grace You have demonstrated in Your creation. You have created us to worship and praise You, not because You need it but because You are worthy! Amen.
