KEY THOT: Whenever things are looking down, it’s time to look up and see the One who is “enthroned upon the cherubim” (v.1). When we catch a glimpse of Him who is exalted over all peoples, we will know that He is in control. We can surrender our concern to Him, for He rewards those who seek him. In fact, we should do more than look up—the psalmist calls us to worship at his footstool because “holy is he!”
When we are down and discouraged, the antidote is not mourning and groaning before God but to lift up our voice to praise and worship Him. While we may be defeated by our circumstances, He is never defeated, for “the Lord reigns”! He is in charge and in control. When we exalt Him and worship Him at his footstool, we allow Him the opportunity to speak to our situation (revelation) and transform our situation (wisdom)—whether it is a difficult subject we cannot master in school, or a work crisis that seems intractable or a family issue that is going out of control. There is no unsolvable problem with our God: He reigns!
When we make room for His coming into our situation, we must let him take over. If we restrict him to work within our “company policies” or “church traditions”, we are tying his hands up. God is creative and his solution may surprise us—or even shock us. If God is to be in control, he must be in control, not us. We can't expect the Lord of glory to fit into our old mindsets with its rules and regulations. He is likely to overturn them as he did to the tables of the traders at the temple.
Moses, Aaron and Samuel are among people who had called upon his name: “They called to the Lord, and he answered them” (v.6). But he appeared and spoke to Moses and Aaron in a pillar of cloud, like nothing they had experienced before. And he gave them his laws to obey. If we want to have God on our side, we must stay on His side by keeping his testimonies and statutes: “whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him” (1 John 3:22).
Father God, thank You that You are never defeated by any situation because You reign and sit on the throne upon the cherubim. May You come among us in Your pillar of cloud to be our King and Avenger as we enthrone You in our praise and worship. Amen.
