Psalm 46 The River from God's Throne-room

KEY TEXT: Ps 46:4-7 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

KEY THOT: From the midst of the city of God, the "holy habitation of the Most High," flows a river that brings God’s life wherever it flows. The Apostle John saw this river of life flowing from the throne-room of God in Revelations 22:1-2: “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” God is the source of our life and wherever the river flows, there is His life, presence and protection. Jesus mentions this river in John 7:38-39, “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'" Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

The Holy Spirit is the river of life flowing out of the holy habitation of the Most High. Wherever it is received, it brings divine presence and power to revive nations and destroy the enemies of our souls. On the day of Pentecost, Peter rose up and said, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). The means is forgiveness of sins but the end is the gift of the Spirit, the river of life that connects us with the very throne-room of God. We can’t do anything that pleases God apart from the Spirit. Even our prayer to be heard must be inspired by the Spirit: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God” (Rom 8:26-27). We can never over-emphasize the ministry of the Spirit, for He came to glorify Jesus. Only the Spirit can help us glorify Jesus and grant us access into the Father’s throne-room.

Therefore, I must pray to be filled with the Spirit continually, especially when I'm making a decision. Only the Spirit can ensure that the decision I make is aligned with the will of God. And this applies not just to spiritual decisions but also daily mundane ones regarding the homes, children's education, office-work, business strategies and ministry in church. However, we can only have the promise of God’s presence and protection in our families, workplaces, schools, campuses and churches when our life goals are aligned with the divine agenda of extending Christ’s rule into these places so that Jesus might be all in all, not us.

Father, thank You for the river of life that flows out of Your holy habitation to bring Your life, presence and protection in our life. Keep our eyes looking up even as we go about our daily routines today. May every decision we make today be Spirit-inspired and Spirit-led. Amen.
