Psalm 34:15-22 The Lord Delivers the Righteous

KEY TEXT: Ps 34:17-19 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

KEY THOT: Implied in these promises are also the realities that even the righteous will have troubles, will be discouraged and crushed at times, and will have afflictions. As long as we live in this fallen world of sin, Satanism and selfishness, we will encounter trials and troubles. That is the Bad News. But the Good News from God’s Word is that the Lord will deliver the righteous out of all their troubles, discouragement and afflictions when they call upon him for help. Instead of relying only on our own limited resources and competencies to solve our daily challenges, we can always call upon the Lord for help---24x7. Blessed is the person who prays without ceasing—especially when the challenges are continual and unceasing, as in a typical workday in many offices. Before we go on “auto” and respond or react to situations that arise, pause for a second, say an arrow prayer and then trust God for wisdom and help.

As believers, we have the privilege of coming into God’s presence anytime: “The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry” (Ps 34:15). We have God’s undivided attention: his eyes are watching our every move and his ears are waiting for us to cry out to Him so that He can move in and intervene on our behalf: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Ps 34:18). God is just a prayer away.

I must always pray without ceasing in the Spirit. I ought to make prayer as natural and as necessary as breathing because it brings God into my everyday decisions and ensures my spiritual survival. At the end of the day, I can then say, “Thank You Lord,” not “Why Lord?”

Father, thank You Your eyes are always focused upon us and Your ears are constantly listening to our cry for help. You are never tired of hearing our prayers because You want to be involved in our lives to show Yourself strong and to honour our faith in You. Amen.
