Psalm 34:1-8 God Delivers Us from Troubles

KEY TEXT: Ps 34:4-5 I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.

KEY THOT: Prayer is more than just saying the right words—it’s an attitude of seeking the Lord until He answers and delivers us from all our fears. When that happens, our faces are radiant, not looking ashamed and defeated. Prayer is not about us, or how “well” we can pray—it is about the Lord who alone has the power to deliver us from our fears and troubles.

The psalmist David exhorts us to stay God-focused when we encounter troubles. Instead of being paralyzed by fears, we should seek the Lord until He has set us free from all our fears. One way to stay God-focused is to “bless the Lord at all times” and let his praise “continually be in my mouth”. If our minds are “stayed upon Jehovah”, our “hearts are fully blest” (Frances Havergal, 1878)

Like a River Glorious Like a river glorious is God’s perfect peace,
Over all victorious, in its bright increase;
Perfect, yet it floweth fuller every day,
Perfect, yet it groweth deeper all the way.

Refrain:
Stayed upon Jehovah,
Hearts are fully blest
Finding, as He prepomised,
Perfect peace and rest.

Life is not always smooth—even when we are walking in God’s will. Sometime we will get knocked sideways or even turned upside down. But if we keep our hearts focused on the Lord by seeking him with "prayer and supplication with thanksgiving," we will experience His peace which “surpasses all understanding” (Phil. 4:6-7, ESV). Like Peter's walking on waters, we will be able to walk on storming waters as we keep our eyes focused on Jesus, rather than the raging sea.

Father, what amazing peace You offer us whose hearts are “stayed upon Jehovah”. You not only grant us peace but deliver us from all our fears. Amen.
