KEY THOT: Jesus says, “I am the bread of life.” He didn’t say, “I am the cake or cream of life.” Jesus is not the icing on the cake either. Perhaps for us Asians, he might have said, “I am the rice of life” as bread/rice is a staple food for us. it's not optional. So Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God.” This implies that just as bread is basic food for physical sustenance, so Christ who is the Word of God is the basic food for spiritual sustenance. It satisfies an inner hunger and thirst for God for which every human is created with.
Just as we cannot survive physically for long without bread, so we cannot survive spiritually without Christ as the Living Word. When we read the Written Word, we are not just trying to get “thoughts”—we are feeding on Christ who is the Living Word behind the Written Word. It is our spirits that need to be fed, not our minds, for eternal life is communicated from Spirit to spirit: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life” (John 6:63).
I have a tendency to read Scripture for ideas. But Christ the Living Word invites us to feed on him in order to receive God’s eternal life, not glean some theological ideas. It is the Christ that we seek in Scriptures, not just the biblical truths. Only Christ through the Spirit can give God’s life to revive my spirit: "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life" (John 5:39-40).
Father, thank You that Jesus is the Bread of Life and knowing Him is the only way to satisfy our inner hunger and thirst for which You have put within us. Amen.
