KEY THOT: The starting point for a church to be filled with the “fullness of God” is our experience of God’s power through the Spirit in our “inner being” (or “inner man”, often identified with the human spirit). It is through God’s Spirit in our inner man that Christ is now able to “dwell in your hearts through faith” (v.17). We cannot experience Christ in our hearts without the Spirit’s power.
A simple analogy from technology might help: if we compare the human heart to the microchip in a computer, it would need to be “powered up” before it can process any images. The power cable is like the Spirit, which powers up the computer to enable it to receive images from the Internet. In the same way, the image of Christ can dwell in our hearts after the Spirit has "powered" it up.
The ultimate goal of the Spirit’s ministry is to enable Christ to dwell in our hearts so that as a congregation, we may be filled with the fullness of God. It is only when God's presence fills the congregation that pre-believers can enter into fellowship with Christ in our midst, as the Spirit reveals Christ to them.
God has provided all the heavenly resources for us to reveal Him to the world. I play my part by allowing Christ to dwell in my heart by faith with the help of the Holy Spirit. It’s not argument that is going to win people to Christ, but the very real presence of Christ in our midst that will convince others that Christ is real.
Father, I pray that You will grant us to be strengthened with power through Your Spirit in our inner man, so that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith and that we may be filled with the fullness of God.
