John 3:1-17 You Must be Born Again

KEY VERSE: John 3:16-17 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

KEY THOT: God loved the world lost in sin and because he loved, he gave his only Son. Love by definition is about giving, not getting. God loved and so he gave his most precious possession—his own Son. God’s desire is that the lost might be saved from self-destruction because of sin. Salvation is entry into the kingdom of God (v.5) in order to save (regenerate) and salvage (renew) sinful humanity into the image of Christ: “he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration (new birth) and renewal (new life) of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5).

God sent his Son to die on the Cross in order to rescue us from our sin and to restore God’s image in us, patterned after Christ. I should not be content with getting people “saved” (regenerated) but also focused on getting people “salvaged” (renewed).

The church is the kingdom community formed by the Spirit of God to nurture those who have been rescued from Satan’s kingdom. Christ-like image development requires a new nature (born of the Spirit) and a new nurture (kingdom community). My ministry responsibility is to help create a kingdom community where people can get rescued and renewed.

Father, thank You that You loved us so much that You sent Your Son to die on the Cross for our sin; but You didn’t stop there. You sent Your Spirit to form a kingdom community to regenerate and to renew lost humanity damaged by sin.
