1 John 5:1-6 Love Turns Law into Grace

KEY TEXT: 1 John 5:3-4 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

KEY THOT: When we are motivated by love, obedience is not a burden. Some preachers are so law-phobic that any suggestion of “commandment” brings up the fear of salvation by works, not grace. But yet the same people would insist that their teenagers keep their house rules. Teenagers who love their parents don’t think obedience to their parents’ house rules burdensome. And if we love our heavenly Father, loving His children (other believers) is not burdensome: “everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.” Those who have a problem with keeping God's commandment have a problem with God, not with His commandments.

Obedience to God’s commandments is a privilege and a joy when I am motivated by the love of God and the love for God. When I am motivated by love, the law becomes the channels of His grace.

Like the psalmist, I must daily meditate on God’s House Rules to see how else I can obey them more diligently so that I can enjoy His presence in His house of prayer and worship. When I am motivated by love of God, every yoke is easy and every burden is light.

Father, what a privilege and joy to obey Your commandments when I am obeying them out of love for You. Deliver me from fear of legalism, for perfect love casts out all fears. Amen.
