Psalm 51:12 A Cleansed Heart is a Clean Heart

KEY VERSE: Ps 51:7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

KEY THOT: A clean heart is not a sinless heart but a heart cleansed by confession and God's Word.

Only when our heart is clean will we be able to experience God’s Holy Spirit and the joy of salvation. Jesus says, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." However, a clean heart is not a sinless heart but a cleansed heart. We are cleansed by the blood of Christ whenever we confess our sin: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

We also keep ourselves cleansed through the daily washing in the Word of God: “that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word” (Eph 5:26).

So we can keep our heart clean by daily cleansing through confession and meditation on God’s Word.

Firstly, I must confess my sin as soon as the Holy Spirit has convicted of sin, whether in thought, word of deed. It should be a daily discipline, not a weekly one—for if we wait until Sunday, we may have accumulated so much spiritual and moral defilement as to make us lose the sense of God’s presence in worship. Secondly, I must daily wash my heart in the Word, for whenever I read God’s Word, it becomes like a mirror to show up the defiling thoughts and intentions in my heart and then washing them off as the Word brings healing and cleansing.

There is no short-cut to holiness—I have to keep my heart clean on a daily basis by confessing my sin (agreeing with Holy Spirit’s judgment of my sin) and reading of God’s word to reveal spiritual and moral corruption picked up from daily interactions with the world and its media.

Father, I thank You for the blood of Christ that is always available for my cleansing as I confess my sins before You. Keep me cleansed and clean as I meditate on Your Word daily. Amen.
