Psalm 19: Creation Reveals God's Attributes

Ps 19:1-4 The Heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their measuring line goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

The entire psalm 19 speaks of God’s self-revelation in His creation and in His law. The first is accessible to all, while the second is accessible to few. The psalmist asserts that God speaks not only through the words found in the law but also through the words in his creation: “Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge...Their measuring line goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world” (v.2,4). So, nations who don’t have the Scriptures have no excuse for not knowing God: “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Rom 1:19-20).

I can learn as much about God from his creation as I can from the Bible. I must not be afraid of Science because it reveals facts about God and His ways of working in His creation. True Science strengthens our faith in God, never the reason for atheism.

I must develop a greater desire to learn more about God’s created order and how to discern God’s attributes by studying the natural environment and behavior of its inhabitants. I must learn to discern God’s voice by studying in his created order, not just the Bible.

Father, this is Your world. You speak through Your creation and reveal Your power and glory, including Your beauty and care for Your creation. Thank You that because You care for the lilies in the fields and birds in the air we know that You care for us. Amen.
