Philippians 2:5-11 The Way UP is DOWN

KEY VERSE: Phil 2:5-6 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, (NIV)

KEY THOT: As believers, we are to share the same attitude Jesus had—being willing to relinquish all power and privileges belonging to God in order to take on the human nature so that he could be obedient to the point of death.

The attitude that led to Jesus’ exaltation is that of humility and humiliation. He was willing to humble himself down to the lowliest position of a bond-slave (doulos), without any rights or privileges. His humiliation is the reason for his exaltation or promotion to the highest place of honour “in heaven and on earth and under the earth”.

Jesus’ attitude should be my attitude too: my priority in life is not to seek promotion but obedience. As I take on the servant-attitude of Jesus Christ, willing even to do the even menial tasks like a bond-slave (whatever position or title I may hold in an organization), I am truly on the same path of promotion and glory that Jesus has trod. Jesus himself has said, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (Matt 23:12). The way up is down.

My focus in ministry or work is humble service: how can I serve others and help them maximize their potential and also to come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ so that they might have life. My life mission is to seek others’ welfare and promotion, not my own.

Father, what a joy and privilege it is to know that I don’t have to have big titles to be big in Your eye. I thank You that humble service that seeks others’ welfare and promotion is what will get Your attention, resulting in You exalting me in the eyes of the world. Amen.
