Jeremiah 31:31-34 From Conduct to Character

KEY VERSE: Jer 31:33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

KEY THOT: The new covenant is new in that God’s law is written on the hearts of the people, instead of written on stone, clay or papyrus. But the end remains the same: a people of God who is holy and “know the Lord.”

While not spelled out here, we know from Ezek 36:27 that Jeremiah here is referring to the Holy Spirit which will be given to all believers: “And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”

The Spirit is not contrary to the Law. The Spirit personalizes and internalizes the Law within our hearts, so that becoming God’s people is no longer about keeping rules but about being transformed in our inward character to become one who knows God personally.

Instead of focusing on keeping rules (biblical or traditional), my focus should be on knowing God and allowing His Spirit to transform my inward character by changing my attitudes towards God and others.

Father, let Your Spirit fill me afresh this morning! May my heart be purified by Your Word and empowered by Your Spirit to think, speak and do according to Your will. Amen.
