Hebrews 5:5-10 God Promotes the Obedient

KEY VERSE: Heb 5:8-10 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

KEY THOT: Jesus was appointed by God as high priest because was made perfect by suffering.

In these days of plenty and ease, it’s difficult to associate Christianity with suffering. Yet, Jesus became perfect in obedience because he suffered. He did not seek to exalt himself but humbled himself and became obedient unto death: “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Phil 2:8). And it was because of his obedience that he was exalted to his present position as high priest: “Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’” (Heb 5:5).

If I am willing to humble myself and learn obedience when I encounter tough times, God himself will similarly promote me to the place of honour and respect. I don’t have to engage in power struggle or office politics to get promotion. Promotion and exaltation come from the Lord.

So, whenever I encounter challenging situation, I should be asking God what He is teaching me through this trial, not praying to get out of this pain, I must pray for God to show me his purpose for putting me through this particular period of suffering. As Christ's disciple, I am called to follow him in the way of the cross.

Father, I thank You for putting me through tough times in order to perfect my character so that You may exalt and promote me. Grant me the grace to learn obedience through suffering. Amen.
