1 Corinthians 1:18-25 Cross is God's Power and Wisdom

KEY VERSE: 1 Cor 1:22-24 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
KEY THOT: While the message of “Christ crucified” may seem foolish to the worldly-wise (Greeks) and a stumbling block to the religious (Jews), yet once believed, it releases God’s power and wisdom to those who are saved through faith.
The message of the Cross is so counter-intuitive and counter-culture that it cannot have been invented by sinful humanity. The message of “Christ crucified” is so humbling to the intellect and so offensive to religion that it could not have its origin in humans—but God.

I must be careful never in the name of seeker-sensitivity remove the offense of the Cross to make it more palatable to the modern and postmodern ears. If I remove the offense of the Cross, I also remove its power to save and its wisdom to confound the worldly wise.

Tonight is Alpha week 2 on the topic “Why did Jesus die?” This is an opportunity to explain the message of the Cross. It will offend those who are not ready, but it will save those who are ready. May God grant us wisdom.

Father, what amazing power is released when the simple message of the Cross is preached. Thank You for the opportunity to hear it tonight and to share it with pre-believing guests. Amen.
