Mark 8:31-38 Winning by Losing

Mark 8:34-38 And he called to him the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it.  For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?  For what can a man give in return for his life?  For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

KEY THOT: Jesus is saying that sometime when we stand up for Christ and His gospel, we may lose our “life”. Nothing in this earthly life can compare with Christ and His gospel. We may become the richest person on earth, but it we do not have Christ and are not engaged in gospel work, we miss the whole purpose of life.

This earthly "life" that Jesus speaks about here is not just a reference to our physical life but also includes our professional and social life. Many of us shrink from representing Christ faithfully in our workplaces or social circles because we are afraid it might undermine our professional or social advancement. We are afraid that if we stand up for Christ and openly share the Gospel that our professional and social life will suffer. So we try to “save” our professional and social life by not making any definite stand for moral and spiritual values consistent with Christ and the Gospel.

In my professional and personal circles, I should not avoid speaking about Christ or the Gospel when both are being challenged or attacked. When opportunity arises to share about Christ and His power to save, I must not be ashamed to speak up. Jesus also said in today’s reading that “whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Especially in our generation, when Christian values are being undermined by the media and movies, we must not become ashamed of Christ and His gospel, for it's still the power of God for salvation of all who believe.

Lord, help me not to be ashamed of You and Your Word of truth and to speak out and share them when the opportunity arises. Thank You for the privilege. Amen.
