1 Thess 1:2-5 We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.
In this short passage, Paul thanks God for the Thessalonian church because of their "work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ." Notice that faith, love and hope are mentioned here and each attribute produces character fruits that are visible: work, labor and steadfastness. Faith without work is dead, so is love without labor and hope without steadfastness. While faith, hope and love are the gifts of the Holy Spirit, they produce fruits in our personal lives. We cannot claim to have faith, hope and love but show no fruits of character.
The reason why these gifts of the Holy Spirit must translate into life transformation is because "our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction" (v.5). Paul emphasizes that his gospel did not come only "in word" (information) but "also in the power" (transformation). The Gospel is not just some information to believe in but the power of the Holy Spirit to transform lives with "full conviction", viz., conviction of our sinfulness and the victory of Christ over sin, Satan, the world and the flesh at the Cross.
Thank You Father, that the Gospel is life-changing and imparts to us the gifts of faith, love and hope that produces work, labour and steadfastness within us. May we receive Your Spirit's power so that our lives may reflect You character. Amen.
