Jeremiah 2: Drinking from the Fountain Source

Jer 2:13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."

The Lord says Judah has committed two sins: they have rejected the "spring of living water" and substituted it with "cisterns that cannot hold water". Instead of coming to the God to get living waters, they replaced God with their own self-made substitutes--substitutes that cannot hold the water of life.  God is the ever the Source of  living spring water. Once connected with this Source, we will never run out of living water: "whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (John 4:14). The water that God gives us through Jesus Christ is the water of eternal life.

Here Jesus is making reference to the Holy Spirit whom those who believe will receive. In fact, elsewhere He says: "The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life" (John 6:63). When we come to Jesus we come to the Source of living water that will well up to eternal life. When we drink of this living water, we will be satisfied and will not yearn for the cisterns peddled by the world that cannot hold water.

However, self-made religions, institutions and humanistic philosophies are like empty cisterns. They look good and sophisticated on the outside but cannot hold water. They are empty vessels that make the most noise in the world. As containers they are useless because they cannot fulfill its promise to hold the water of life.

May we not focus on building or buying empty and useless cisterns but focus on abiding in Jesus Christ who alone can quench the thirst in our souls with the living water that every human person is yearning for.

Lord Jesus, we thank You that You are the Source of living water. Help us not to be distracted by empty and dead cisterns the world is peddling. Help us keep our eyes focused on You, the Source of life. Amen.
