Ecclesiastes 8: God is the "Theory of Everything"

Eccl 8:1 Who is like the wise man? Who knows the explanation of things? Wisdom brightens a man's face and changes its hard appearance. (NIV) ...
Eccl 8:14-17 And this is not all that is meaningless in our world. In this life, good people are often treated as though they were wicked, and wicked people are often treated as though they were good. This is so meaningless! So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun. In my search for wisdom and in my observation of people's burdens here on earth, I discovered that there is ceaseless activity, day and night. I realized that no one can discover everything God is doing under the sun. Not even the wisest people discover everything, no matter what they claim. (NLT)

No one has all the answers: only God knows everything. When any person thinks he or she has all the answer, he is either deluded or ignorant: "Who knows the explanation of things?... Despite all his efforts to search it out, man cannot discover its meaning."

Scientists have attempted to come up with a "Theory of Everything" since the times of the ancient Greeks-- a theory that will explain all physical forces in the Universe (gravitational and electro-nuclear forces) in one neat mathematical equation. Professor Stephen Hawking's own search leads him nowhere because he refuses to acknowledge God as the Creator. His theory of the universe's origin (popularly known as the "Big Bang" theory) pushes him to the inevitable conclusion that the Universe has a beginning -- it started as a singularity point of time, space and energy which exploded in infinitesimal time to become a full-blown Universe. When asked what came before the "Big Bang" his answer was typically Nothing. In other words, according to Stephen Hawking, Nothing created Something out of Nothing. Stephen Hawking's Universe has no room for the spaceless and timeless spiritual universe where God resides: his physics cannot explain this dimension. So, he conveniently rules that out. So, his theory of everything (if he ever succeeds) would not explain everything but only the physical universe.

In fact, there is already a Theory of Everything and that is God. If we believe in God as the Originator of Everything, then God is the  explanation of everything: it will explain not just the physical universe, but the human universe (of which Stephen Hawking admits his physics cannot explain) and the spiritual universe (of which Stephen Hawking denies exists). So King Solomon declares: "I realized that no one can discover everything God is doing under the sun. Not even the wisest people discover everything, no matter what they claim" (NLT). I pray that one day, Professor Stephen Hawking will accept the Theory of Everything--God.

May we always remain humble in the knowledge that we don't have all knowledge.

Father, thank You that You knows everything and You are the Explanation for Everything. Our search for the Theory of Everything has ended--it is You! Amen.
