Prov 7:21-27 With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life. Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say. Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths. Many are the victims she has brought down; her slain are a mighty throng. Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death.
Solomon continues his warning against sexual temptation started in Proverbs 6. The on-going trial of the 51 men charged with having sex with an under-aged prostitute is already exposing the moral state of our society. Sadly, among the 44 already charged are men of high social standing like a former school principal, military captain, a civil servants, teachers, and industry leaders. Plus the on-going sex-for-contract trial of former SCDF chief and grade-for-sex trial of former NUS law professor. Not to mention the female teachers who are engaging their students in sexual activities.
All these cases are just the tips of the iceberg.
Proverbs 7 warns us that those who engage in illicit sex (paid or consensual) are on the path to self-destruction: they are "like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life." It's really not worth it--unlike other pleasures, this will lead to the moral grave, "the chambers of death." Those who have been caught have become "public figures" because their names and faces are published in the internet. They have hurt those who are closest to them - their spouses, parents and children. And they have jeopardized their professional future because of their criminal records.
Internet pornography is another problem that is plaguing our soccety. While there is no survey conducted, the numbers of people (young and old) "ensnared" here is still unknown. But judging from what has already been exposed, this may be a serious below-the-surface problem.
Perhaps, this is a place to remind us of what Jesus says. Lust begins with the heart and the eyes, not with the act: "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."
That is how serious God views the sin of sexual immorality.
Father, deliver us from a heart that strays and eyes that lust. Help us keep our hearts and minds focused in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
