2 Sam 22: David's Psalm of Praise

2 Sam 22:1-4 And David spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.  He said, "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
2 Sam 22:21-25 "The Lord  dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not wickedly departed from my God. For all his rules were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside. I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt. And the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight.

There is so much in this psalm of David, that it could be expanded into a small book if we were to fully expound it. There are so much we can learn about David, the Lord and David's intimate relationship with his God.

  • God-Descriptors:  In first four verses David addresses God by eight descriptors: Rock, Fortress, Deliverer, Refuge, Shield, Salvation, Stronghold and Saviour. Every descriptor that David uses about God reflects his own theology of God -- that He is is able to save and deliver us from every challenge that Satan may throw at us. With God as our Rock, we shall be unshakeable; with God as our Fortress, we shall be secure from our enemies; with God as our Deliverer, we shall never be stuck in losing situations; with God as our Refuge, we can always find comfort in sorrow; with God as Shield, we shall not be afraid of the Devil's darts of accusations; with God as our Salvation, we shall find solution to every problem; with God as our Stronghold, we will have courage; with God as our Saviour, we shall find forever remain in the presence of God.
  • God's Actions for David: When David prayed, answered him and rescued him and routed his enemies (7-20). David is conscious that God dealt with him according to his righteousness, and according to the "cleanness of my hands he rewarded me" and of the need to walk blamelessly before God in order that God will always be with Him (21-28). For it was God who directed David's decisions, gave him physical prowess, trained him to fight as a warrior, granted him perseverance to gain victory over his enemies, kept him as leader of his nation (29-46). For all these reasons, David was able to exalt God with resounding praises (47-51). Hallelujah!
Since we worship the same God of David, we can trust Him to guide us, strengthen us, train us, and equip us. And when we face difficulties, He is there to save and deliver us, just as He did for David. Thanks be to God our Saviour!

Father, what a joy & privilege to know You, the God of David--a God who grants victory to His children. May we turn our eyes upon You and trust You to deliver us from our daily challenges in the schools, campuses, camps, homes and workplaces! Amen.
