Worship Leader or Song Leader? (Psalm 34:1-8)

Ps 34:1-8 I will bless the Lord  at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together! I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.  The angel of the Lord  encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

This is one of my best loved psalms, probably because its words have been used in many hymns and songs. Again, David wrote this psalm in the midst of a trying period of his life. The title of this psalm says: "Of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away." It's amazing how many of David's psalms were written in times of personal crises, failures and disappointments. One would have thought that such times would have driven him to despair and make him lose all inspiration for song-writing. But it is precisely in hard times that inspirational worship overflows from David's life. It's like crushing flowers--the fragrance is released when the flowers is crushed under pressures. In the same way, a worship leader is one who has gone through the grind of life but because his heart is filled with the Spirit and God's Word, such life pressures actually release the fragrance of "psalms, hymns and spiritual songs" in David's life. But if David was not a man of the Spirit and the Word, the pressures of life would simply elicit murmurings and complaints from him.

All true worshippers and worship leaders need to be people who worship God "in Spirit and in truth" (Spirit + Word). It's out of the fullness of the indwelling of the Spirit and the Word that our lives overflow in praise & worship:

Eph 5:18-19 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the SPIRIT,addressing one another in PSALMS and HYMNS and SPIRITUAL SONGS, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart.

Col 3:16 Let the WORD of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing PSALMS and HYMNS and SPIRITUAL SONGS, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

John 4:23 "But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in SPIRIT and TRUTH, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him."

O God, fill us with Your Spirit and Truth as we seek You in our prayer & our meditation on Your Word, so that we may become true worshippers whose lives overflow with "psalms, hymns and spiritual songs" when life's pressures crush us. Amen.
