The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.
For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (ESV)
I see here David's declaration of the blessings of being a worshiper of Jehovah-God:
1. GOD IS OUR INHERITANCE: "The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup": Our greatest blessing is not the things that God gives but the Lord himself. When we have Him as our chosen portion and cup, we can say with David, "the lines have fallen for me in pleasant places" and that we have a "beautiful inheritance."
2. GOD IS OUR SECURITY: "The Lord...gives me counsel": God is our constant Guide, and because of that "I shall not be shaken... my flesh dwells secure". This is our security - that God Himself will personally guide and instruct us in the way that we should go. We are not left on our own so long as we "set the Lord always before me."
3. GOD IS OUR FUTURE: "You have not abandon my soul to Sheol": Not only in this life is God our inheritance and security--even in death, He is our inheritance and security. He will not abandon our soul to Sheol, the shadowy world of the dead. But for us, death means being in the presence of God in paradise. But that is not all. One day, our souls will be fully restored when we are resurrected with immortal bodies! What a glorious day that will be! To enjoy life once again, only on a brand-new Planet Earth with a brand-new environment filled with brand-new animals! Back to Eden, but many times better!
4. GOD IS OUR LIFE: "You make known to me the path of life": What a privilege to have eternal life. But what is eternal life? Jesus defines it in John 17:3, "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." Eternal life is knowing God, because when we know God, we walk in His presence: "in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
Father, thank You for all the blessings we have in You. For in You we have life. In Your presence, we have fullness of joy and at Your right hand we are blessed by Your pleasures forevermore! Amen
