2 Corinthians 4: Priority of the Unseen

2 Cor 4:7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

We are all jars of clay, but within us is the Treasure, the Spirit of Christ so that when people see us or are ministered by us, it is not us but it is the Christ within us they experience. So we should always give Him the glory for every good fruit. If people focus on us, what they see is  the jars of clay, not Christ. But by the grace of God, we have the Treasure within that releases the presence of God to minister to others.

2 Cor 4:18-5:1 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

What is seen is temporal (physical) but what is unseen is eternal (spiritual). What are the  things that are unseen (invisible) and are eternal? We can think of things like love, character, relationships, God, evil spirits, righteousness, peace, etc. None of these are visible but they are no less real. And because they are eternal and not visible, they are not measurable by the tools of science & technology. The things that Science can measure and extrapolate are temporal. Science can only reveal to us temporal truths, but not eternal truths. For that we need to go to the Word of God. Scientific investigation is limited to the seen and the temporal but spiritual knowledge is focused on the unseen and eternal.

The "jar of clay," our human body (earthly tent) is visible and therefore temporal. However, our soul and spirit are invisible and therefore eternal. But one day, God will replace our earthly tent (natural body) with an eternal house (spiritual body) and this is eternal. Thank God in Jesus Christ, we already have eternal life - all the unseen treasures and glories of Christ dwelling within us!

Father, help us focus our life and ministry on what is unseen (eternal) rather thanwhat is seen (temporal), so that Your Holy Spirit who is source of all things eternal. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
