1 Timothy 1: The Roots of Love

1 Tim 1:5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. NIV

Love is the end point of our faith - love for God and love for others. Love is the fruit of the tree but its  roots are:

1. Pure heart: A pure heart refers to our  motives and desires that are uncontaminated by evil intentions. Jesus has said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." When our heart is pure, we see God in  every person and therefore able to love them.

2. Good conscience: A good conscience is one that is free from guilt and condemnation because it has been cleansed by the Blood of Christ through the forgiveness of sins. Until we experience forgiveness of sins through the grace and mercy of God, we will find it hard to extend grace and mercy to others too.  To love others as God loves them, we have to see them as God sees them, not as objects of wrath but as objects of His love. People who do not know God are not condemned  sinners, but lost children of God. A good conscience sees God not as an angry Father awaiting to punish sinners but an anxious Father awaiting the return of His lost children.

3. Sincere faith: Without faith, it is impossible to please God. But faith must be sincere, not presumptuous or false. Love requires faith. Whether that love is directed towards God or others, we need faith to love. Faith in God's transformational power is required to love people who are unlovable and unlovely. We can love with sincerity even the worse persons because we believe in God's amazing grace to transform the worst sinners.

So, to grow love, we must take care of our roots viz., a pure heart, a good conscience and sincere faith.

Lord, may You grant me purity of heart, a good conscience and sincere faith daily. When I fail in any of these three areas, please forgive me and grant me a pure heart, good conscience and sincere faith again. In Jesus' name. Amen.
