Leadership Tips from Proverbs 22

Today is 22 September. So I turned to Proverbs 22 & found two verses that relate to good leadership (v.11 & 29). In these verses are found 3 qualities that make a person worthy of a king's court:

11 He who loves purity of heart, and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend...29 Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.

Three leadership principles we can use are:

1. Integrity: Integriy is defined as loving "purity of heart." It is a character issue. When we love purity of heart, we hate duplicity and dishonesty. We mean what we say and say what we mean. There is no manipulative talk and no double-talk. We are to be as straight as an arrow in our character. No leader can survive long without keeping this basic principle.

2. Gracious speech: Proverb 22:11 also tells us that people who will have the king as his friend have gracious speech. In other words, their talk is filled with words "seasoned with salt" (Colossians 4:6). Basically, they speak positively without harshness and judgement in their words. It is a reflection of the condition of their heart of grace. Only those who have fully appreciated the grace of God will speak graciously to others: in kindness and love, not harshness and condemnation. Speaking harshly and manipulating others may get people to do things our way, but it will not make us friends of kings.

3. Competency in our work: When we are skillful in our work, we will one day be in favour before powerful people. Another way to put this is that we get promoted. The "average" will not amount to much. If we want to be a leader, we need to have the competency to shine and so be noticed by kings. Competency grows out of a passion for a particular ministry or work. Passion gets us to places where duty can only talk about. When we are passionate about our work, we do it skillfully. I read in the book, "Extraordinary Leadership" that for us to really excel in leadership, there must be three intersecting factors: (1) our competencies (2) our passion (3) organization's vision. When our competencies and passion match the organization's vision, we will be promoted quickly in that organization and be elevated in the eyes of the people as their leader.
